The EHR/HIE Interoperability Workgroup, a consortium of forward thinking States, leading market share EHR Vendors and HIE Vendors was formed with the goal of increasing the adoption of EHRs and HIE services by eliminating the significant “interface” cost and time barrier. The workgroup members have collaborated to leverage existing standards and provide guidance around specific implementations for the most commonly used interfaces by defining plug and play connections between EHRs and HIEs.
Founding State members of the EHR/HIE Interoperability Workgroup include California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Oregon. Founding EHR vendors include Allscripts, eClinicalWorks, e-MDs, Greenway Medical Technologies, McKesson Corporation, NextGen Healthcare Information Systems, Sage Healthcare Division and Siemens Healthcare, and founding HIE Vendors include Axolotl (now OptumInsight), InterSystems, and Medicity. All vendor participants have agreed to be part of the workgroup and comply with the workgroup’s guidelines and specifications regarding their respective EHRs and HIEs and states have agreed to promote vendors that comply with these specifications. This strategy was designed to promote a scalable approach that allows for rapid deployment at an affordable price, thereby expanding market opportunities for vendors.
